4.2. Tankless Water Heaters vs. Conventional Storage Tank Hot Water Heaters
This article compares Tankless Water Heaters with Storage Tank Hot Water Heaters, and explains the overwhelming benefits that You can obtain by installing a Tankless Hot Water Heater in place of a traditional storage water heating system in most applications.
Conventional Storage Tank Hot Water Heaters supply hot water that has been heated a long time before it´s intended use, and held in an insulated storage tank until you demand it by turning on the hot water faucet.
Tankless Water Heaters (´On-Demand´ or ´Instant´ Water Heaters) supply hot water that is heated ´instantly´ at the time of use when you turn on your hot water faucet. As with conventional storage tank water heaters, both gas-fired and electrically-heated tankless water heaters are available. Tankless heaters are available for ´Central´ or ´Point of Use´ hot water applications.
Even the most efficiently insulated storage tank hot water heater allows some heat loss over time, and since the tankless water heater does not store any hot water, it generally represents the most efficient of these 2 water heating technologies. In fact, for most residential and commercial applications you can expect about 10 to 20% energy savings (sometimes up to 70%) when changing to a tankless water heater.
Tankless Water Heater Use In North America
Tankless water heaters are now rapidly spreading across North America, in both residential and commercial applications. Although instant hot water technology has only recently been introduced to the US, it has been extremely well proven elsewhere, over many decades. In fact, on-demand ´instant´ hot water heaters have been used since the 1930´s throughout Europe, and are also very popular in Asia and South America - where energy costs have always been far more expensive than in the US.
´On-Demand´ Tankless Water Heater Benefits
Currently, most American homes and workplacesare are provided with hot water from a conventional gas-fired or electrically-heated storage tank hot water heater. These storage hot water heaters keep a large reservoir tank of water hot 24-hours a day, even when it will not be required for hours. As these storage hot water heaters are progressively worn-out and replaced, over the next decade, we expect to see increasing use of the more energy-efficient ´on-demand´ tankless water heaters.
An ´on-demand´ or ´instant´ tankless water heating system does not store any hot water - it simply heats your water ´instantly´, as you demand it, and then stops heating as soon as you turn off the faucet. This efficiency of operation allows the tankless water heater to provide several benefits:
Tankless water heaters are significantly (10-70%) more energy efficient, which saves energy costs and also makes them more environmentally friendly than any conventional storage tank hot water heater.
Tankless water heaters maintain their high efficiency throughout their service lifetime. Conventional storage tank hot water heaters decrease in efficiency over time, primarily due to mineral build-up inside the tank during long-term hot-water storage, thereby reducing heat transfer. Some insulation degradation may also increase heat losses over time.
´Centrally´ installed storage tank heaters and tankless heating units often cannot supply truly ´instant´ hot water because cool water in the pipe between the heater and faucet has to be run off. For long runs of pipe, ´point of use´ tankless water heaters may be installed to overcome this limitation and provide essentially ´instant´ hot water.
Since the tankless water heater provides ´instant´ hot water, only as you demand it, you can essentially have an endless supply of hot water - provided you size the unit appropriately.
A tankless water heater is very unlikely to develop a corrosive leak like a conventional storage tank water heater. This results in longer service life and also saves you from expensive water damage in your home. Modern tankless water heaters are typically designed to last for 20 years (compared to about 10 to 15 years for most conventional storage water heaters)
Tankless water heaters are much smaller than conventional storage tank hot water heaters, and may even be wall mounted (saving valuable floor space). This also means that you can often locate a tankless heater much closer to the point of use, saving more energy and providing hot water to the faucet much faster down a shorter length of pipe.
A modern tankless water heater is almost entirely recyclable, so if you ever decide to replace it, it doesn´t have to go to the landfill.
Tankless water heaters obviously provide many advantages, but the ability to provide ´instant´ hot water also generates some concerns amongst people who are newly introduced to this technology. The most common questions and misapprehensions are addressed in the Tankless Water Heater FAQ List. |
