Heating Systems Guide - Hydronic Heating Systems
By Jackie LoBuglio - JD Supply Hydronic Heating System & OEM Parts Outlet

Heating Systems, Cooling Systems, and Heating, Ventilating, & Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems, have been around for many years. In this Heating Systems Guide we describe the several types of Residential Home Heating Systems and Commercial & Industrial Heating Systems that are commonly available in North America. You may also wish to refer to the section on Combined Heating & Cooling Systems.

    1. Heating System Guide

    1.1. Residential Home Heating Systems
1.2. Commercial & Industrial Heating Systems

    1.1. Residential Home Heating Systems

Residential Home Heating Systems are available in several different types, each of which is covered in some depth below:
    1.1.1. Forced Air Home Furnaces
1.1.2. Electric Home Furnaces & Electric Home Heating Systems
    1.1.3. Hydronic Home Heating Systems
1.1.4. Residential Fireplaces or Home Heating Stoves

    1.1.3. Hydronic Home Heating Systems

Hydronic Home Heating Systems move hot water or steam through pipes to transfer heat to different locations, and may be utilized for space heating of both indoor and outdoor areas. Hydronic Home Heaters are usually Radiant Heating units, although Convective Heating units are also available (and some convective heating also occurs from radiant heaters).

Radiant Heating technology has existed since the early Romans used ´Hypocaust´ Central Heating systems to heat private homes and public baths. Radiant Heaters emit electromagnetic energy from a warm ´element´ (floor, wall, overhead panel). This radiant energy travels through the air space at the speed of light, and warms people and other objects in rooms directly, rather than heating the air.

Convective Heating units allow heat transfer within a room due to the natural tendency for warm (low density) air to rise and cold (high density) air to fall. This natural movement of air within a closed space is referred to as a Convective Cell.

The Heat Transfer Medium in a hydronic heating system is Water or sometimes Steam that is heated in a Boiler by the exothermic combustion of natural gas, oil, propane or solid fuel, or by electricity. The heated water or steam is then circulated to a series of heat transfer devices in each room, which lose heat before returning the water back to the boiler for re-heating.

This article presents some of the main Advantages Of Hydronic Heating Systems and the Disadvantages Of Hydronic Heating Systems compared to other residential heating systems that are currently available. Following pages provide an overview of modern Heat Distribution Methods For Hydronic Heating and also the major components of Hydronic Heating Systems Equipment.

    Hydronic Home Heating System Advantages
Hydronic Heating Systems often provide more " even heat" than other systems. A steady supply of warm water through the heating unit results in a constant supply of heat to the home. Even when the circulating pump shuts off, the mass of water in the system will continue to emit heat until the water cools.

Hydronic Radiant Heating Systems provide the most energy efficient heating units currently available. These systems heat bjects, rather than heating air that can easily escape through doors and windows. The heat is not transferred to the ceiling as with forced air systems and thus, there is much lower heat loss. In order to achieve the same level of comfort, the internal air temperature of hydronic radiant heated buildings may be about 3 degreed Fahrenheit lower than for convectively heated buildings.

Hydronic Heating Systems are space savers - a small volume of hot water will deliver the same amount of heat as a large volume of warm air, so heating water rather than air requires a water-filled pipe much smaller than duct-work.

Hydronic Heating Systems are are quiet - because there is no fan required to move air around the building. Valves and boilers operate quietly in the background.

Hydronic Heating Systems Systems allow for tighter temperature control - because of the infinite ability of the system to trim room temperatures gradually, rather than with a blast of hot air from a forced air furnace.

Hydronic Heating Systems are flexible - the boiler can be located anywhere (even outside, so long as there is freeze protection), and the heaters can easily be zoned such that different sections of the home can be kept at different temperatures.

Finally, Hydronic Heating Systems can be used to heat domestic water and for a variety of other heating purposes throughout the home. Some examples include greenhouses, garages, swimming pools, spas, hot tubs and snow melting systems for sidewalks, driveways and steps.

    Hydronic Home Heating System Disadvantages
With the exception of fan-coil systems, residential hydronic heating systems cannot provide cooling, humidification, air filtration, or forced air circulation. Additional units are required to do this.

Hydronic Heating Baseboard units must remain unobstructed, and can provide challenges in furniture placement.

Baseboard Heating System temperatures rise slowly - if you have turned down your thermostat while away for extended periods of time, it will take some time to bring a large space back up to a comfortable temperature. Forced air furnaces raise temperatures much quicker, though they are prone to overshoot and not as efficient as hydronic heating systems

Excessive heat gains, from sources such as sunlight through a window, can´t be easily transferred from one area to another. Additionally, as with any plumbing system, damage can result in the event of leaks.

Heat Distribution Methods for Hydronic Home Heating Systems
There are several methods of distributing heat from Hydronic Heating Systems, including:

  • Hydronic Heating System Baseboard Convector Units
  • Hydronic Heating System Cast Iron Baseboard Convector Units
  • Hydronic Heating System Radiators
  • Hydronic Heating System Hot Water/ Forced Air Fan and Coils
  • Hydronic Heating System Kickspace Heaters
  • Hydronic Heating System Radiant Floors
  • Hydronic Heating System Radiant Ceilings

  • Hydronic Home Heating Equipment
Hydronic Home Heating Systems consist of several pieces of equipment including the:

  • Hydronic Heating System Boiler
  • Hydronic Heating System Circulator (Circulating Pump)
  • Hydronic Heating System Zone Valves
  • Hydronic Heating System Expansion Tank
  • Hydronic Heating System Air Elimination Devices
  • Hydronic Heating System Heat Transfer Devices
  • Hydronic Heating System Heat Exchanger
  • Hydronic Heating System Mixing Valve
  • Hydronic Heating System Controls
  • Hydronic Heating System Piping
  • Hydronic Heating System Pipe Insulation

  • 1.1.4. Residential Fireplaces and Home Heating Stoves

Fireplaces and Heating Stoves are a good choice for those with access to reasonably priced wood fuel sources, and a safe convenient location in the home to install them.

    Fireplaces
Fireplaces are available in various configurations, and for different fuel types:

  • Wood Burning Fireplaces
  • Natural Gas Fireplace Inserts
  • Coal Burning Fireplace Inserts
  • Pellet Burning Fireplace Inserts
  • Heating Stoves
Heating Stoves are available for a few different fuel types:

  • Corn Heating Stoves
  • Pellet Heating Stoves
  • Coal Heating Stoves
  • Wood Heating Stoves
  • Gas Heating Stoves
