9.6.1. Residential Portable HEPA Filtration Systems

For applications involving individual room air purification, there are numerous types and sizes of HEPA air purifiers available today. Generally, these are self-contained units that have a fan section, a pre-filter, a HEPA filter, and often a carbon filter (to remove odors and gas-phase contaminants). Residential room air purifiers are designed to remove allergy-causing particulate from the air with the HEPA filter, while the carbon filter can remove nuisance odors and even some harmful gas phase contaminants.

9.6.2. Residential Whole House HEPA Filtration Systems

Today, HEPA Filters are frequently installed in Residential Central HVAC applications. Typically, these residential HEPA Filters are applied as either Central HVAC System Bypass Units or Independent Air Purification Units. However, there are also Auxiliary Units (such as Energy Recovery Ventilators and Heat Recovery Ventilators) available, which may be installed as stand-alone units that can be ducted into rooms where radiant heat is used and a Furnace duct is not present.

Bypass Installations such as the Honeywell F500 HEPA Filtration Unit, can be ducted into the return air plenum of a standard air handler or furnace, and are equipped with an Integral Blower Unit so the furnace or air handler is not required to overcome the airflow resistance of the HEPA filter.

Heat Recovery Units such as the Venmar HEPA 300 Heat Recovery Unit, are ideal for residential applications in cooler climates. The HEPA 300 features a Heat Recovery Core. 40% of the air drawn into the HEPA filter unit from the house is exhausted to the outside through the Recovery Core, while being replaced by an equal amount of fresh air.

The Heat Recovery Core allows the heat to transfer from one air stream to the other. The result is a constant supply of fresh air, no unpleasant drafts and greater home comfort. These units are easily ducted using the 6" flexible ducting supplied with the package. A homeowner can have fresh air introduced to their home, without a big increase in utility useage.

Energy Recovery Ventilators are ideal for use in warmer climates with high humidity. Units such as the Venmar HEPA 4000 are designed to maintain ideal humidity levels throughout the year. The HEPA 4000 unique Energy Recovery Core extracts outdoor humidity during the air conditioning season and transfers it, in part, to the contaminated air leaving the home, thereby preventing outside humidity from getting inside. The process is reversed during the cold season to replace moisture loss due to home heating, and the heat from the indoor stale air is also transferred to the fresh air stream, conserving energy dollars.
