9.5.1. Cleanroom Ceiling Mounted Terminal HEPA Filter Systems

When selecting HEPA Filters For Commercial or Industrial Cleanroom Applications, many of the same rules apply to the process as are used in selecting HEPA filters for Medical or Biological applications. Cleanroom manufacturing processes require High Purity air filtration to protect the raw materials and the end product from particulate that can damage the product or cause it to fail in use.

9.5.2. HEPA Fan Filter Units

HEPA filters that have an integral supply fan as part of the unit are called HEPA Fan Filter Units.

HEPA Fan Filter Units can be ducted directly from the supply air system, recirculate room air through the HEPA filter or can pull air from the interstitial space above the ceiling if it is an open plenum design. The supply fan can be either constant volume or can have a speed control to vary the volume of air moved to balance the unit for the application.

HEPA Fan Filter units are a great choice for retrofit applications in gowning rooms or anterooms where it is required to increase the cleanliness level by recirculating room air through the HEPA filter. The unit can be mounted below the ceiling (and simply pull room air though the filter), or it can be mounted in the ceiling and be ducted to a return air grille.

For applications where the Makeup Air Unit cannot handle the additional pressure drop associated with terminal HEPA filters, HEPA Fan Filter Units can be installed using the integral supply fan as a booster fan to compensate for the filter resistance.

9.5.3. Production & Chemical Processing Tank Venting HEPA Filtration Systems

Production & Chemical Processing Tank Venting HEPA Filtration Systems are used in applications where a chemical storage or holding tank needs to be vented, and the air that is brought in to pressurize or vent the tank needs to be of high purity to protect the bulk chemical from contamination.

HEPA filters in these applications are typically custom sized, and can have specialized flanges, gaskets and pleat material.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE or TeflonŽ) is commonly used for these types of HEPA filters, and is chosen for it´s chemical resistance.
