Cooling Systems - Residential Air Conditioners
By Jackie LoBuglio - JD Supply Air Conditioning Outlet
Heating Systems, Cooling Systems, and combined Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems, have been around for many years. In this Cooling Systems Guide we describe the different types of Residential Air Conditioners and Commercial & Industrial Cooling Systems that are commonly available in North America. You may also wish to refer to the section on Combined Heating & Cooling Systems.
2.1.1. Residential Split Air Conditioning Systems
Split System Air Conditioning Units split the cold side from the hot side. Residential Split Air Conditioners are available in 2 configurations:
Residential Split Air Conditioners With Air Handling Units
The cold side of a Split Air Conditioning System consists of the expansion valve and the cold coil, and is generally placed into a furnace or some other Air Handler.
Residential Split System Air Conditioning

The Air Conditioners ´Cold Side´ With Air Handler Is Situated Inside The Building
The Air Conditioners ´Hot Side´ Condensing Unit Is Placed Outside The Building
The Air Conditioning systems ´Air Handler´ blows air through the cold coil and routes the cooled air throughout the house via ductwork. The air conditioners hot side, known as the ´Condensing Unit´, is installed outside. The condensing unit consists of a long, spiral coil shaped like a cylinder, a fan that blows air through the coil, a weather-resistant compressor, and some control logic.
Besides the fact that the air conditioners hot and cold sides are split apart, and the capacity is higher (making the coils and compressor larger), there is little difference between a split-system air conditioner and a window air conditioner.
Residential Ductless Split Air Conditioning Systems
Ductless Air Conditioning Systems require just a 3" diameter opening to connect the indoor and outdoor units. This results in an easy installation, less mess, and therefore lower installation cost than for systems with Air Handling Units. Often, Ductless Air Conditioning Units have a quieter operation , ability for zone control, can be operated with a remote control, and may be equipped with washable filters.
Ductless Air Conditioners are available as Air Conditioning units only, or can provide Heat as well. Many units use Inverter Technology which creates high speed cooling and smooth modulation of comfort levels.
2.1.2. Residential Window Air Conditioning Units
A Window Air Conditioner Unit implements a complete air conditioner in a small enough space to fit into a standard window frame. You simply close the window down onto the unit, plug the unit in, and turn it on to get cool air. Integrated fans blow air over the cold coils to improve their ability to dissipate heat (to the outside air) and cooling (to the room being cooled). If you remove the cover from an unplugged window air conditioner unit, you´ll find that it contains:
|
1. A Compressor
2. An Expansion Valve
3. A Hot Coil
4. A Chilled Coil
5. Two Fans
6. A Control Unit |
