If your basement is prone to flooding during the winter months and you live in an area where floods and thunderstorms can knock out the power, then it is especially recommended that you install a backup sump pump that can work on its own power. Even if your power supply is usually reliable, it is still recommended that you install a backup sump pump. A properly installed, good quality backup sump pump, will prevent flooding should your primary sump pump fail for any reason. There are two main types of backup sump pumps. One runs on a 12Vt rechargeable battery, while the other operates using city water pressure. Battery Operated Backup Sump PumpA Battery Powered Backup Sump Pump System automatically charges itīs battery under normal conditions, when mains power is available. When your primary sump pump fails, the backup pump is activated by a sensor that is located slightly higher than the one for the main pump. In the event of an emergency, when water rises above the level of the backup sensor, the backup system uses its DC power to pump out your sump pit. There is enough power to keep your sump pump working for several hours, which is usually sufficient time for power to be restored, or for you to fix any problem with your primary sump pump. Water Powered Backup Sump PumpWater Powered Backup Sump Pumps do not require electricity, batteries, or chargers to run. Instead they rely on the power of moving water, from your city water supply, to remove water from your sump pit. Water Powered Backup Sump Pumps require very little maintenance, and are therefore considered more reliable than battery powered units - so long as you have a consistent supply of city water.
