9. HEPA Filters Guide - Choosing The Optimum HEPA Filter For Your Application
HEPA Filters are now used in a wide range of applications including; Medical/Biological HEPA Filtration in clinics hospitals and research facilities, Commercial/Industrial HEPA Filtration in manufacturing and cleanroom facilities, and also Residential HEPA filtration for control of allergens. This HEPA Filter Guide explains the different types of HEPA filter available, and will help you understand how to choose the best HEPA filter for your particular application.
9.1. HEPA Filter Applications
Heating and cooling systems that use HEPA Filters are becoming more prevalent today, as Indoor Air Quality is being emphasized more strongly in building management. To meet this demand, HEPA Filters are now available in many different configurations, each optimized to fit a particular application or piece of equipment. Here are some of the many applications in which HEPA filters are now commonly used: |
|
HEPA Filter Definition
Previously known as High Efficiency Particulate Arrestors, High-Efficiency Particulate Air filters (HEPA filters), are a form of extended surface media air filters.
A ´True´ HEPA filter must be at least 99.997% efficient - allowing no more than 3 particles in 10,000 to penetrate the filtration media. |

Residential ´Whole House´ HEPA Filtration Systems
9.2. HEPA, ULPA And SULPA Filters
There are 3 basic types of HEPA Filter efficiencies available in the market today:
HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) Filters - An extended-medium, dry-type filter in a rigid frame, when tested at a rated airflow having minimum particle collection efficiency of 99.97% on 0.3-micron particles.
ULPA (Ultra Low Penetration Air) Filters - A throwaway, extended-medium, dry-type filter in a rigid frame, having a minimum particle collection efficiency of 99.999% when tested in accordance with IEST-RP0CC007.
SULPA (Super Ultra Low Penetration Air) Filters - Same as an ULPA Filter, but having a collection efficiency of 99.9999% and designated as a type "G" air filter by IEST-RP-CC001.4.
9.3. HEPA Filter Components

Each HEPA, ULPA, or SULPA Filter is comprised of the following components:
HEPA Filter Media - Typically a microfine fiberglass media, synthetic fibers, expanded film such as Polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) that can be pleated back and forth to form a compact element. Close pleating is necessary to fit all the required media into the desired space, because the paper has a high resistance to airflow and the media velocity is usually in the range of 6 feet per minute.
HEPA Filter Separators - These devices support the HEPA media pleats, and provide channels through which the air can flow to reach the media in a laminar flow pattern.
HEPA Filter Pack - This is the term used to describe the combined HEPA media and separator unit.
HEPA Filter Sealant - This is an adhesive, commonly urethane or silicone, used to create a leak-proof seal between the HEPA filter pack and it´s supporting frame. Sealant may also be used to patch any small leaks that are found in the HEPA filter during in-situ leak testing.
HEPA Filter Seal - This is the seal on a HEPA filter frame that prevents air bypass around the filter. In most instances it is either a closed cell neoprene gasket attached to the face of the filter frame, or a groove in the frame to allow a knife-edge to penetrate a ´non-Newtonian gel´ (a gel that will not be influenced to fall out due to the forces of gravity).
Choosing The Optimum HEPA Filter For Your Application

9.7. HEPA Filter Lifespan - When To Change Your HEPA Filter
For most HVAC applications, HEPA filters can have a lifespan of 1-5 years, depending on the Prefiltration that is used and the final filter efficiencies in place upstream of the HEPA filter. In order to determine when to change a HEPA filter, refer to the manufacturer´s recommended final pressure drop as an initial indicator. Often, there will be a static pressure test port on ceiling mounted HEPA filters, and many air handling units have Magnahelic or Photohelic gages mounted across the filter banks to measure the pressure differential.
In-situ HEPA Filter leak testing is another method used to test the operation of a HEPA filter. Trained and experienced testing firms can inject a challenge upstream of the HEPA filter and measure the concentration of that challenge that is emitted downstream, recording the results in units such as Parts Per Million (PPM) at a certain particle size range.
For any areas of the HEPA Filter that exceed the specified penetration %, the inspecting agent may be able to use an RTV sealant to plug the penetrations in the filter media or frame. There is a maximum allowable surface area that you can repair without causing the HEPA Filter to be failed; approximately 1" square for a single repair, and up to a certain percentage of the total filter face area that varies by manufacturer and specific filter type.
Other instances that may trigger a HEPA Filter change include compromise of the supply air distribution system or water leaks that have entered the duct or the filter. Significant construction or maintenance activities can compromise a HEPA filter and care must be taken to seal off the filter if any work is being done that could cause loading of dirt or debris or damage to the filter media. Inspection and testing of the HEPA filters should be part of ongoing regular preventive maintenance programs for cleanrooms and any HVAC systems where HEPA filters are being used.
9.8. Choosing The Optimum Replacement HEPA Filter For Your Application
When replacing an existing HEPA filter, it is critical that you exactly match the characteristics of the new filter to those of the used filter.

9.9. HEPA Filter Installation Considerations
Verify all of the information specific to Your old HEPA Filter before ordering Your new HEPA Filter
Lead times on HEPA Filters can be anywhere from 1-12 weeks, depending on the particular type that You need
Upon receipt, thoroughly inspect the packaging for signs of damage such as punctures or staining
Remove the packaging just prior to installation, and inspect the HEPA Filter media for any visible punctures or damage
Inspect the frame of the HEPA Filter for any damage
If damage is found, do not install the filter, it is likely that there will be excessive leakage and air bypass around the HEPA Filter media
When installing the HEPA Filter, ensure that you do not touch the media upstream or downstream, this may cause a penetration to occur and fail the HEPA Filter
Once installed per manufacturer´s specifications, it is recommended that you have an in-situ HEPA filter leak test performed by a qualified testing agent!
